Rupert Hartley is a visual artist living and working in Hove, East Sussex, UK. Trained originally in printed textile design at the Glasgow School of Art he later studied an MA Art in Architecture at the University of East London his work evolving through various media and contexts to his current painting practice.
His paintings combine formal geometries and colour and include ongoing series of grids, checkers, stripes, blocks and monochromes. He works both on and off stretcher and uses both canvas and cardboard as surfaces to paint and construct. His interest and approach to painting is as a playful and open -ended process working within and questioning the traditional parameters of painting and exploring its potential to connect to architecture.
Through making work he seeks to question the basic act of how to make a painting and re imagine the relationship art can have with its surroundings. Through materials and process he has developed an intuitive and material led practice. He is interested in using alternative surfaces to traditional fine art materials, exploring how the work reacts to or accommodates different histories of materials and art making.
He has exhibited both nationally and internationally with recent exhibitions including; This Year’s Model Part II at Studio 1.1 Gallery, London, On some faraway beach, Copeland Park, London, The Land of Sol, Sol Space, Nouic, France and Wells Art Contemporary, Somerset.
