Erik Sommer
Erik Sommer is an American artist and curator living and working in New York. His work is about chance, beauty and the attempt to control time. For these recent spray paint paintings he employs a method of staining, soaking and transferring paint through various mediums. He starts by layering raw canvas on top of each other and heavily soaking the outer canvas until it seeps through to the canvas behind. Relying on controlled chance, Sommer manipulates these eects to create aleatory marks and images that appear bold and vibrant yet blanched and aged. By recreating the aging process Sommer is able to aect time in a way that allows each piece to exist within an absence of time.
Sommer is the owner and operator of Mott Projects, a contemporary art project spaced located in New York that features work from international sculptors and painters.
